The need for sanitation in our homes, businesses, and communities has never been more essential than now, with the advent of COVID-19. Throughout Mississippi and our nation, long-accepted practices are being reexamined, and new practices are being suggested and implemented. One change is the role of sanitation in preventing the spread of diseases like COVID-19.
In this era of social distancing and sanitation, portable public restrooms and portable handwashing and sanitation stations have become more imperative. Utilizing these portable facilities, you can help implement several strategies across public commerce and industry to further protect public health, allow the economy to open more fully, and lessen the impact of COVID-19.
Increase the Amount of Portable Facilities
Across multiple economic sectors, strategies for reopening include increased social distancing rules. These basic rules seek to limit interpersonal contact. If you are a facility or job site manager, you need to consider the need for increased toilet facilities.
How Many Units Do You Need?
The standard rule of thumb has been a minimum of one portable restroom per 100 people for up to four hours, and one handwashing station per every four units. Consider increasing the number of rented units to maintain social distancing recommendations. Doubling the number of units halves the amount of exposure for each of your patrons or workers. Also, long lines are not as likely to form waiting for a bathroom.
What Else Can You Do?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends employers emphasize handwashing and provide proper facilities. Along with extra restrooms and handwashing, you can add sanitation stations at strategic places on the job site. Make sure you train all staff on new protocols for sanitation.
Obtain Separate Facilities for Internal Workers and Visitors
If everyone follows OSHA protocols, trained, social-distancing coworkers can work safely together. However, if your workplace is also visited by delivery personnel and by the public, your risk can increase exponentially. Protect your internal workplace and maintain your safe sanitation standards by providing separate facilities for visitors.
You can have portable facilities placed outside the entrance to your business or job site for the designated use of outside parties. You can offer delivery personnel, customers, and other outside visitors dedicated use of portable restrooms and handwashing stations.
Utilize Sanitation Stations Effectively Throughout Your Site
You can supplement these efforts with sanitation stations placed at each entrance to your property (now a common sight at grocery stores and other facilities). Also, consider areas inside your building or outdoor campus where additional sanitation would be most advantageous.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends sanitizing stations right by areas and instances that necessitate handwashing, including touching any public surfaces, touching your face, shaking hands, before and after eating, and touching garbage. If you place sanitation stations near these possible areas of exposure, you offer simple opportunities to disinfect immediately.
Educate and Train Yourself, Your Employees, and Your Patrons
Even if you set up the most effective strategies, they are only as good as their implementation. Make sure to follow CDC guidelines for proper handwashing and hand sanitation. Some key points to remember:
- Handwashing must be done with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds and over every surface of the hands and wrists.
- Although handwashing is the most effective defense against germs, when handwashing is not available, rubbing a gel hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content for at least 20 seconds is also beneficial.
- OSHA offers training and recommendations for implementing sanitation strategies on the job. Utilize these resources to assist your efforts.
Make sure that everyone on your property knows how to stay clean and safe.
