What You Need to Know About Winter Restroom Trailer Rentals
December 2, 2019
No matter what type of outdoor event you are hosting this winter, whether it's an outdoor concert or a holiday light event, you need to provide sufficient facilities for your event goers. Instead of the standard single unit portable toilets, consider bringing in restroom trailers that are equipped to handle a few of the unique issues presented to portable toilets during the winter season.
Consider these issues as you decide which type of toilets to rent.
Winter Comfort
Although dips below freezing are rare in Jackson, temperatures in the 30s aren't unheard of and winter chill and shorter days can still affect your guest's comfort when it comes to using the facilities - unless you plan ahead.
HeatUnlike the little plastic boxes that comprise most portable toilets, a restroom trailer has many of the amenities of a restroom in a home or business. One of the most important of these amenities is heat. A heated restroom can make all the difference when it comes to comfort.
For heated trailers, you must have a power source nearby. If you don't, you may be able to rent a generator along with the trailer so you can generate the necessary power.
Light
Dim light from a battery operated lamp or through a sun panel in the roof won't cut it when the sun is low in the sky and setting earlier in winter. Trailers tend to take lighting a step further than basic portable toilets, so you have fully working lights not unlike what you would experience in an indoor restroom.
Once again, a power source is needed, but the level of comfort provided by the lights makes it well worth it.
Clean Up
Maintenance is a challenge with any type of portable restroom, but the heat and light provided in a trailer makes it a much more pleasant experience for your staff when compared to cleaning a more basic unit.
Maintenance
Although trailers vary depending on the level of luxury you rent, most are made more like an indoor restroom so they have very little molded plastic and no open pit of waste beneath the seat. In fact, since toilet trailers tend to feature flushing toilets, hard flooring, and standard countertops, cleaning one is like cleaning any other type of restroom.
Mud
Mud can be an issue in the winter months, as even light rainfall can lead to muddy conditions since the plants that normally anchor the dirt during rain are dormant for the season. You can place floor mats that are designed to catch mud and water inside the restroom door as well as outside at the entrance.
For ADA compliance, the mats you use must be no more than 1/2 inch thick and the edges must taper to the ground. The mat edges must also remain secured to the ground so they don't cause a tripping hazard.
Location
Placement is everything when it comes to your portable restroom. You must balance convenience for your guests with accessibility for servicing, while also keeping weather concerns in mind.
Ease of Access
Unlike basic portable toilets, the enclosed tanks of a restroom trailer means that you don't need to worry about wayward odors ruining your event. This is good news for placement convenience, simply because you can place a trailer closer to the main event area so guests don't have to walk as far.
The best location is located near the event area but also near a road or parking lot so the trailer can be easily placed, emptied, and picked up by the maintenance crew.
Weather Protection
Fortunately, mild winters means that you don't need to worry too much about weather protection. The main concern will be mud or soft ground. Make sure the trailer is placed on firm ground and on a level site. Avoid areas where water accumulates.
Some trailers have a drain in the floor, designed to make spray down style cleanings easier. Skip this style of cleaning and cap the drain in winter, since water under the trailer can create a muddy mess.
